Your Guide Across The Stat Line Is Here

Nikki Birch

She was a park ranger getting paid in sunrises and smiles. No Wi-Fi. DVDs to watch at night. She taught herself to code from YouTube in the winters because the summers were off the grid. Then she spent two months applying for tech jobs that didn’t work out. And then she took a chance on herself — and built a business.

Nikki Birch joins Skoob on Undiscovered Entrepreneur: Get Across the Start Line for one of the most practical conversations the show has had about what new entrepreneurs actually need to get started. Her most counterintuitive piece of advice: don’t build a website first. And she builds websites for a living.

🧠 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

Nikki Birch’s path to entrepreneurship wasn’t planned. She was a park ranger, then she learned to code because she wanted location freedom, then she spent two brutal months applying for tech jobs and getting eliminated in round three of seven-round interview processes. Instead of giving up, she asked a different question: why do I need someone else to decide whether I’m good enough?

She built her business on websites — and the most valuable thing she learned over three and a half years is that most new entrepreneurs are building the wrong thing first. A logo won’t get you clients. A $2,000 website won’t get you clients. What gets you clients is a simple PDF explaining what you do, a link where people can reach you, and the willingness to tell everyone you know that you’ve started.

In this conversation, Nikki and Skoob cover the income fear that stops most entrepreneurs before they start (and how to work around it), why imposter syndrome doesn’t disappear with experience, why the people who are already doing what you want to do are almost never your competition, and why a Stanstore link might be all you need for your first year in business.

The pitfall she’s most proud of: failing the tech job hunt completely — and discovering that taking a chance on herself was the only path she actually wanted.
